Hi Carl,

Welcome to the Forum.

You can reach me at maurice @ msheppard.com (remove the spaces) and please try to include a closeup of the maker's nameplate if there is one. Having said that, it may be difficult to date it accurately.

Kind regards,

Maurice

Hi Rosie,

I hope you're keeping well.

As you may have a bit of a wait before that episode hits the site, I will tell you that it is Marie's grandson, Leslie Alexander HUMPHREYS, who was also a very accomplished cello player. (It seems to run in the family! )

Still desparately short of pictures of Marie and her family and I'd dearly love to know who inhertited all her family papers. I certainly hope that they didn't end up in a car boot sale or, even worse, on a bonfire! Her brother ended up in South Africa and I'm waiting for his probate papers now, but I'm sure he wouldn't have had them as he left the UK in 1882 and I don't think he and Marie ever met after that.

But I live in hope that something will show up somewhere.

Take care,

Maurice

My great-great grandfather John Longmore Holmes was born in Ireland - Dublin I believe - on 1 April 1818, and moved to London when young, becoming an ironmonger in Limehouse and later in Sutton. He married Mary Ann Rundell.

His father's name was William, but I know no more about his history. Can anyone help me and explain his middle name 'Longmore' please?

Thanks

Hi Daniel
My earliest Longmore is Thomas, married to Phoebe Watson. He was born in Brosely/Barrow around 1780. I think his father may be Humphrey who married Mary Posting in Broseley 23/7/1777
All this is subject to me being able to check the records when I get to England later in the year.
Thomas had a son, John, b around 1812 in Tipton who married Eliza Baker who was from Wednesbury. They had a son Edwin (later called Edward) b around1850 in West Bromwich. He in turn had a son named Ernest b 1893 in Warrington. He had a son named Albert Ernest b 1923 in Warrington who was my father. If you are able to confirm or comment on any of this I would be very grateful

Hello Lynn,

Welcome to the Forum!

Well the parents and two siblings, Ann & John, are living in the same street in 1901 at number 267. My guess is that she is staying with a friend or relation somewhere and her surname has not been recorded as LONGMORE. You could do a search of other houses in the street looking for an Elizabeth born in 1897, but even if you find one, you still can't be certain without a lot of cross checking. On the face of it, it seems to be a question of incorrect recording. If you find one that meets the criterion and is also a visitor, you may be onto a winner.

Regards,

Maurice

Hello Mike,

Welcome to the Forum!

I can certainly give you a link, but there is some discrepancy about Harriett's surname.

She was originally born Harriet WINWOOD, but married Joseph WATKINS on 20 December 1849 at Colwall. Her marriage to Edward NEWELL in 2nd Qtr 1860 is on FreeBMD - Upton Reg Dist Vol 6c Page 465

To my knowledge, Edward & Harriet had 6 children:-

Edward - February 1861
James - Circa 1863
Sarah Ann - Circa 1865
Alice Jane - 4 Qtr 1867
Elizabeth - 2 Qtr 1870
Allen - Circa 1871

Edward NEWELL senior, to whom you originally referred, is my great grand uncle. He is the ninth child of William & Honor NEWELL (nee BARROW). If you need further information please email me at:-

maurice(@)msheppard.com removing the brackets and putting LONGMORE in the subject line.

Regards,

Maurice
