Lists of theatre entertainers
24.11.2008 at 14:37:21

Hello,
I have been looking at your Theatrical list,I have been searching for a list such as this for ages.
I have a a relative listed on the 1881 census in Wolverhampton his occupation is comedian and his wife was Actress.I wonder if you could help or point me in the right direction to help find these people.
Unfortunately they were not on your list, does this mean I have failed again at possibly the first hurdle  Angry

Hello Woddillon,

Welcome to the Forum  Smiley

Sorry I'm a bit late with this reply - I only just spotted your query.

There are two possible things you can try searching, one free, the other not. The free one is Gales Database of 19th Century Newspapers at http://access.gale.com/gdctrial/index.html - just register your details and they will give you 14 days free trial.

Look specifically in issues of "The Era" - the theatrical newspaper of the time, but, of course, you may find theatrical reviews in other newspapers too.

The other one to check out is the archives of "The Stage" which more or less takes over where "The Era" leaves off. However, you will have to buy a timed pass for this one. You can do that at https://archive.thestage.co.uk/Default/Skins/TheStage/Client.asp?Skin=TheStag...

I still have about 2000 deaths to add up to 1919, when I can find the time. If you like to let me know the names of the people you are checking, I will certainly have a look for you if you think one or other of them may have died by this date.

Regards,

Maurice

Thank you for replying to my Query,I cannot seem to find any ref to theatrical news or people on the Gale site but then I am unsure where to go as I have tried several searchs' and have come up with nothing,
I would have to try the Stage when I have a day to look.
The relative I am Looking for is William James Harbon (comedian) Died in sept 1884 in Birmingham. His wife was Maria Hart (actress) as she was only 28 when he died she probably remarried but I have no evidence yet of this.
I did enrol on Gales site  for a free trial so if you can point me to which area i should search ,I would be very grateful.
Thanks again
Shelagh

Hi Shelagh,

Well it seems that Maria Harbon married again in the 1st Qtr 1886 at Salford to either a Joseph BUCKLEY or a John Hughes Jones. As both of these are fairly common names, it is difficult to be certain what happened to her after that. However, a serach of the 1891 Census for either of these two gentlemen might reveal which one she married.

HART was probably her maiden name and quite possibly her stage name too, though I can't trace her marriage to William James HARBON  in England or Wales. As she was from Banff in Fife, it is more than likely that she married in Scotland.

Her death is not listed as Maria/Marie HART on any of the theatre records that I have, and I suggest that you try and find her on the 1891 and 1901 Censuses before proceeding much further with her theatrical career.

William James HARBON (born 4 Qtr 1847) appears on the 1861 Census working as a jeweller with younger siblings Emily & George and parents James and Sarah, James being a shoemaker and the family residing in one of the courts off High Street Birmingham.

The big problem will be to find the stage name which William used. Once you get your Gales free trial, search for the name HARBON and see if anything turns up, likewise with Marie (or possibly Maria) HART. If Maria carried on working after her second marriage, there's a chance she will appear in "The Stage", but less likelihood of finding William in that publication.

By all means get back to me if you get stuck. You could also try joining the Theatre_UK Mailing List and asking on there. For details see here: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~jassie/theatre/index-page3.htm

Regards,

Maurice

I am searching for information about William James HARBON, born Birmingham, a comedian and his wife Maria HART, an actress, who was born in Scotland.

Welcome to the Forum, Hannon!  Smiley

It looks as though you and Shelagh should be pooling your research. You can, of course, communicate with each other using the Personal Message system and those messages will not appear on this thread.
