Roy LONGMORE died 21 Jun 2001 - The Age Web Site (www.theage.com.au) 22 Jun 2001

Australia's oldest Gallipoli veteran Roy Longmore has died at the
age of 107, leaving only one Australian survivor of the Anzac campaign.
Mr Longmore died in his sleep at his Melbourne nursing home yesterday
with his family at his bedside. Veterans' Affairs Minister Bruce Scott
said arrangements were being made for a state funeral. Mr Longmore, who
enlisted in July 1915 at the Geelong Town Hall, arrived at Anzac Cove,
Gallipoli, three months later. He served as a bombardier, a treacherous
task that involved digging tunnels under the enemy trenches and then
blowing them up. After the Gallipoli campaign Mr Longmore went to Egypt
and was transferred to the 2nd Pioneer Battalion which he served on the
Western Front in France. He was twice wounded in action once at Pozieres,
France, in August 1916, and again in April 1918, also in France. On both
occasions he remained at his post. He was promoted to lance corporal in
June 1918, and discharged in July 1919, after which he returned to his
family. Mr Longmore's war service has been honoured both by the French
government and his own. In 1998 France awarded him the Legion of Honour
and in 1999 he received the federal government's 80th Anniversary
Armistice Remembrance Medal. Last year he was featured in the Australia
Post stamp series The Last Anzacs.
